For those that prefer museums with a more contemporary, international collection, the Moco Museum displays a wide range of modern, inspiring art.
Current exhibitions focus around street art, with a great number of original artworks on display by artists such as Banksy, and the lesser-known but equally poignant Icy & Sot.
The museum is situated in Villa Alsberg, an early 20th century mansion which overlooks Museumplein, in the heart of Amsterdam. The building was designed by Eduard Cuypers (the nephew of renowned architect Pierre Cuypers who designed other Amsterdam landmarks such as the Rijksmuseum and Central Station) and is arguably a work of art in itself, offering an example of villas typical of this period.
In addition to the extremely popular Banksy exhibition, the Museum exhibits a selection of additional collections. The MoCollection is a permanent display of art which aims to celebrate the contributions of world-famous artists such as Warhol, Basquiat, Koons, Hirst and Haring. The exhibition explores what it is to become a truly great artist and how each of these artists took their moments in time and history and distilled these surroundings into pieces of timeless art with huge cultural relevance in past and current society.
The Moco Museum shows a fascinating perspective on the place of modern art in society and for those interested in art, subculture, and the impact of art on fashion, the museum offers a unique insight into these themes in a totally different way to the usual stuffy museum or art gallery.
The only downside of the popular museums and galleries in the city is the potential for a long and boring wait in a ticket queue. But by booking tickets with us online, you can avoid long queues and receive a discount on the door price! Skip the line and save money!
